More info on Nokia-Apple ITC case

Looks like the Finnish news outlet Taloussanomat has got their hands on Nokia's ITC complaint. They have some details that have not been seen in blogs in English yet (I think) so I got the main points translated (here is a Google translation from Finnish too).

The complaint is almost 50 pages. And yes, Nokia quotes Steve Jobs from the documentary Triumph of the Nerds saying how "...we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas" (watch it in YouTube).

So according to Anssi Vanjoki Nokia copies with pride and according to Jobs Apple steals shamelessly.

In the article you can read how Nokia claims that
  • The navigation wheel in iPods infringes Nokia's patent from 2001 that patents a very similar technology
  • iPhone and iPod Touch infringe Nokia's patent from 2000 where the keys of the keyboard on touch screen become larger when user touches the keyboard
  • Most of Apple's products infringe Nokia's patent from 1998 related to text- and email messages where the phone numbers as well as www and email addresses are highlighted inside of the messages. Then, for example, by clicking such highlighted phone number user can make a phone call or save the number in the address book. A click to a www address can open the web browser.
  • iPhone infringes Nokia's patent from 2003 that describes a technology to shut off the touch screen of the phone during a phone call so that user's ear or cheek would not cause false presses in the UI
The last two claims mentioned in the article are more technical and there are less details about them. Nokia claims that
  • Multiple Apple's products infringe a patent that involes "combining multiple functionality of the camera on the same chip"
  • iPhone infringes Nokia's patent (that saves space in the device) that "combines the antenna around the speaker". As a bonus a patent around power saving is mentioned.
The article also reveals that in addition to the ITC complaint, Nokia has opened, or is going to open, a new case in the Delaware court in addition to the original case from October.

  1. What a load of crap. Nokia, I will never ever buy your crap devices again as long as I live. You used to make great mobile phones which everyone wanted. Now look at how low you have to go to try and make an extra buck. Stop spending money on this type of nonsense and start spending the money on better designers and engineers!
Build an iPhone and Android killer, not the weak crap you are now producing. Even Sony Ericsson seem to be doing a better job at the current moment (Saito).
Finally, Nokia, Let your mobile devices speak for you ... not you lawyers.

  3. It's true that Nokia are highly disappointing in the last year, but still, the patents must be obeyed.
There's only one Nokia that good for me - 6303. The rest have largely demanding OSes, extremely short battery life, many software bugs, and high prices. Not to mention the low build quality on E52 for example - I know the plastic is cheap, and there's an economic crisis, but I won't pay 400$ for this crap. And stop making phones in China - they suck - bring them back to Finland, as this is the case with E51 and E71.

  4. If patents were the issue here, then why didn't Nokia care about them way back when the iPod became the number one selling electronics device back in 2004, or when the iPhone quickly became the number one selling smartphone back in 2008? Why didn't they simply ask Apple to pay the appropriate royalties to use their technology? No, Nokia decides to go for the kill– a ban on all Apple products. Patents aren't the issue here, it's Nokia's failing business practices. Nokia is full of crap and I hope they lose hard on this one.

  5. Terry P said...Nokia makes wonderful phones. They have proven to be almost indestructible. I have used them for a majority of my 20 years in the military. Apple makes a nice phone but it works better as a gadget. I like the things the IPhone does but I didn’t like the price I had to play a month for it’s use. I found that the IPod Touch works better. (Had to let the IPhone go). Phones are like Gaming systems now. Most play movies, search the internet, and shop but the object is to play games right. Phones are to communicate. Nokia does it better than Apple. Now if someone steals your ideal and gets paid Billions of dollars for it wouldn’t you want some of that money if you got proof they stole it? I know I would lol.
